Addiction
the reason people become addicts is to relieve the stress from the need to perform, to try to please someone else or to become what someone else thinks you should be.

Guilt
I have been bad – but I can be forgiven! It is a lie that you cannot be forgiven.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. … For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Shame
I am bad, and there is nothing I can change (which is the lie.) You can be forgiven.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2
In God’s eyes, you are his good and wonderful child. He is your Father, full of grace and forgiveness. He is Love. Getting rid of shame comes from redemption: replacing the lies with God’s truth and believing in the truth. This process is a gift from God and is implemented by the renewing of the mind.
